The first quality we notice about a person is their gender. Through centuries of society forming stereotypes, we subconsciously make quick assumptions about a person based on their gender. For example, a dominant ideology about a man is that he must be strong and masculine where as a female is meant to be maternal and feminine. But how can we tell a person's gender? Apart from the obvious biological differences, fashion plays a important role in distinguishing between the sexes and expressing a person's identity.

A non-binary person believes they're neither female or male but another gender imbetween the two. But how does this third gender get represented through fashion? In 2017, well known bands such as Zara and H&M released gender-neutral ranges in their shops and John Lewis scrapped boy/girl tags in their children's clothes.

This radio documentary will take a look into the lives of non-binaries by investigating whether a binary fashion industry effects their way of expressing themselves and if gender-neutral ranges really are a step in the right direction. I will explore how the 21st century is adapting to cater for the third gender and what this means for the future of fashion.
